Iranian Seafood: An Introduction

Iran has coastlines on two very different bodies of water: the warm waters of the Persian Gulf and the Sea of Oman in the south, and the Caspian Sea in the north. Together with cold-water farms inland, this gives Iranian producers a wide range of seafood, from farmed shrimp and wild-caught cuttlefish to rainbow trout and Asian seabass.

Farmed shrimp

Whiteleg shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei) is raised in coastal farms in southern provinces such as Bushehr, Hormozgan, Khuzestan and Sistan and Baluchestan. It is offered in graded sizes and several forms, including head-on, headless, and peeled and deveined, frozen in export packs.

Wild-caught cuttlefish

Pharaoh cuttlefish (Sepia pharaonis) is caught in the Persian Gulf and the Sea of Oman. It is supplied whole, cleaned or as tubes, frozen for export.

Other species

The waters of Iran also supply tuna, kingfish and grouper, and its farms produce rainbow trout and Asian seabass.

Quality and export

Reliable export supply depends on a continuous cold chain, food-safety systems such as HACCP, and the health certificates that importing countries require.
